Guidance/ Info:

Bjørnstigen is an alluring hiking destination due to its’ beautiful views and unique history. The first part of the hike is fairly easy as you walk along Grunnavatnet (lake) on the right-hand side. The lake offers good fishing opportunities, and at the far end of the lake you will find a beautiful spot for swimming. As you incline you will get a nice view over Fjellgardsvatnet (lake) which also offers a good picnic area. Bjørnstigen  lies directly next to a tall wall of rocks where poeple all the way back to the 17th century until the early 20th century struggled to survive of the land. In the 18th century the croft house burnt to the ground which forced the inhabitants to live in a cave further up in the gorges (the cave is called Madsa-stova) whilst rebuilding their house. Later the house was moved down to Ørnes where in 1989 it got dismantled and moved back to its original place by a few enthusiasts from Mo skule and 4H (educational facilities), which turned out to be a very comprehensive project. Today the house stands on its original walls, the smokehouse is restored,  whilst the masonry shows that the barn was originally built connected to the farmhouse. The stone slabs that the cows settled on back then, are in the very same place today.

The return walk can alternatively go via Botnavatnet (lake). Take the first right after crossing Sørelva (river), walk via Sjurstølen and return home (5-6 hours). Other options are to take a left at Prestabotn and walk towards Etne (Kritle), under Bjørndalsvia. You can also walk towards Sauda via the northen part of Bjørndalen or walk to Tysseland via the southern part of Bjørndalen.

Regular sealed shoes, but if you choose to continue the hike from Bjørnstigen you need to bring waterproof hiking boots.
